It’s been more than 40 years since Robert Lyles played football at Belmont High School in Los Angeles, which put him on track to play in the NFL, but his classmates and teammates haven’t forgotten him. As current players for the Belmont Sentinels took the field for their first home game of the school year, Lyles wasn’t far from their minds.

Robert player played the position of linebacker for eight seasons in the NFL for the Houston Oilers and for the Atlanta Falcons. He later served as a head coach in Arena Football League, coaching the Los Angeles Avengers in 2001 and the Georgia Force in 2002.

Robert suffered multiple strokes in 2022. As of September 2022, he is in critical condition in a Texas hospital and needs a heart transplant. With his NFL health insurance expired, his medical expenses were approximately $100,000 as of September 2022, and friends had raised about half that amount.

Praying he makes a good recovery ❤️‍🩹
