Hurricanes Don’t Wait. Neither Should You.

We all know that New York is a city that never sleeps, and the past year has shown us that emergencies 🚨⚠️ don’t take a pause either.

While the City has been through public health emergencies like COVID-19 and monkeypox, natural disasters like coastal storms and hurricanes continue to threaten the city 8.6 million of us call home. This year, as the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaches, New Yorkers must continue to take steps to prepare for the next hurricane.

In New York City, a lot has changed and your hurricane evacuation may have changed, too. Thanks to new and improved storm surge modeling, combined with better topographic data, and information from actual events, the City has updated its hurricane evacuation zones for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. Depending on the strength and direction of a storm, up to 3.1 million city residents may need to evacuate before the storm arrives. Knowing your zone is a small but important step that will help you and your family stay safe this hurricane season.

Finding your zone is easy. Visit NYC.gov/knowyourzone or call 311 (212-639-9675 for Video Relay Service, or TTY: 212-504-4115). You also can find hurricane evacuation centers that are closest to your home.
