Angie Martinez Talks Leadership, Giving & Living With Bozoma Saint John

International Women’s Day programming brought an inspiring moment to the stage as media icon Angie Martinez sat down with marketing powerhouse Bozoma Saint John for an unforgettable panel discussion about career, courage, and personal truth.

From the moment the conversation began, the chemistry between the two was clear. Although the pair joked that they had only met backstage minutes earlier, their energy on stage felt like longtime friends catching up. Martinez opened by praising Saint John’s infectious presence, a sentiment quickly shared by the audience.

Saint John, whose career includes leadership roles at major global brands including Apple Music, Uber, PepsiCo, and Netflix, reflected on the achievements she is most proud of. While being inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame stands as a career milestone, she said her greatest pride comes from being the mother of a 16-year-old daughter she describes as a “phenomenal human.”

The conversation soon turned to a topic many working women face: balance. Martinez admitted she dislikes the question often asked of women about how they balance career and motherhood. Saint John agreed. “There is no such thing as balance,” she told the audience. “You go hard at one thing at a time.” She also challenged the popular idea of multitasking, arguing that real productivity comes from mastering one task before moving to the next.

Throughout the discussion, storytelling emerged as a central theme. Saint John described her success in marketing as rooted in her ability to connect with people through narrative and emotion. “The trick to my success has been storytelling,” she explained. “If I’m in the room with you, I can read your energy and tell the story that connects.” Martinez praised that approach, noting that storytelling is also the foundation of great interviews and meaningful conversations.

Another major focus of the panel was the concept of “pivoting.” Saint John shared deeply personal insight into the difficult career decisions she has made, including walking away from her role as Global Chief Marketing Officer at Netflix. Despite the prestige and financial security of the position, she chose to leave in order to write a book about grief and personal growth after the loss of her husband.

At the time, many questioned her decision. But Saint John emphasized that listening to her intuition ultimately led her to new opportunities, including television and other creative ventures. “People are so afraid to pivot because they think things have to be perfect before they move,” she said. “But greatness actually happens in the uncomfortable space.”

One of the most powerful moments came when she spoke about losing her husband at the age of 37. Standing at his funeral and hearing people say he had “so much life left to live” shifted her perspective forever. “I don’t know when I’m going to go,” she said. “But whenever I do, I want people to say that woman lived.” For Saint John, success today is not only about achievements but about significance, impact, and living life with intention.

As the panel wrapped, Martinez asked what the event’s theme, “Give It to Gain,” meant to her. Saint John offered a surprising answer. Instead of giving endlessly to others, she encouraged women to give to themselves first. “To gain, you must give unto yourself,” she told the crowd. “Put yourself first in your own life.”

The audience responded with applause, closing a conversation that blended humor, honesty, and powerful life lessons. By the end of the discussion, one thing was clear: whether in a boardroom, on stage, or in life, Bozoma Saint John believes every person has the power to change the room simply by showing up fully as themselves.
