Crystal Renee, actress, artist, podcaster, and now proud co-owner of the soccer team DC Power, sat down with Angie Martinez to share her incredible journey. From her early dreams of a music career to becoming one of Tyler Perry’s trusted collaborators, Crystal’s story is a masterclass in resilience, hard work, and trusting the process.
Crystal’s connection to sports goes way back. “Before I even thought about owning a team, I’ve always been a fan,” she said. Now, as part-owner of DC Power, she’s combining her passion for sports with her business acumen. Crystal’s journey began with her love for music, but life had other plans. “I thought music was it for me,” she shared. However, when acting opportunities began to surface, she knew it was time to pivot. “When acting took off, I realized it was a calling I couldn’t ignore,” she said.
Despite her success, the road to stardom wasn’t smooth. Crystal waited 10 years for Tyler Perry to say yes to her. “It’s about honoring where you are and giving 1000% to whatever role you’re in,” she explained. Starting as a production assistant (PA) running errands for Tyler Perry’s team, Crystal worked tirelessly to prove herself. “I went from PA to wardrobe, and eventually, Tyler’s stylist. It was a grind, but every step prepared me for the next,” she said.
For five years, Crystal was the mastermind behind costumes for Tyler Perry’s movies. She even styled an iconic costume for the Madea franchise that paid homage to none other than Beyoncé. But Crystal’s passion for acting never faded. “I was auditioning on the low while working in wardrobe,” she revealed. When she finally mustered the courage to tell Tyler, “I want in,” he didn’t hesitate.
Crystal’s advice for thriving in high-pressure environments? “Bring great energy, be on time, and give your all. Those things matter,” she said. Her consistency and dedication not only earned Tyler Perry’s respect but also led to him being a guest on her podcast, Keep It Positive, Sweetie. “That was such a full-circle moment for me,” she shared. As the host of Keep It Positive, Sweetie, Crystal dives deep into life’s challenges while offering uplifting perspectives. While on with Angie, Crystal even plays a game called “Keep It Positive,” where she gives advice on staying positive in tough situations.
Crystal’s journey from a PA running errands to owning a soccer team and starring in hit shows is nothing short of inspiring.
