In an effort to light up schools and community centers for the youth, Angie Martinez will be traveling with students to Puerto Rico from Rutgers University-Newark’s International Leadership Exchange Program to install We Share Solar suitcases.
Adapted in 2012, the We Care/Share Solar suitcase program is a community engaged experiential learning initiative designed to illustrate the impact of sustainable living to high school, undergraduate and graduate students.
To date, the International Leadership Exchange Program has deployed 8 We Care Solar suitcases, completed 7 school revitalization efforts and executed 5 community gardening restoration projects impacting over 40,000 people in Tanzania, Nicaragua, and India.
When Martinez learned about the service project she was eager to extend her support. Not only is she joining students on their trip to deploy the solar panel suitcases, is producing a documentary of the trip.
She hopes this trip will bring awareness back to the United States and to potentially get more funding to help Puerto Rico get sustainable lighting in the areas that are still in need.
The entire trip will be filmed and made into a documentary. The documentary is set to premiere on TIDAL.
