Killer Mike was able to celebrate his major victory at a venue he was barred from after he was arrested earlier this year.
On Sunday night, June 30, the Atlanta rapper made his grand return to the Peacock Theaters in Los Angeles to attend the BET Awards 2024. During the show, Mike won "Album of the Year" for his recent LP MICHAEL. He took the stage was proud to accept the award from presenter Childish Gambino. In his acceptance speech, he revealed that he technically wasn't allowed to be in the building due to his run-in with security at the Grammy Awards back in February.
“I was put in handcuffs and I was marched out of this building," Mike said during his speech. "But I wanna tell you, look at God because I’m back, baby. I’m back.”
Mike was arrested after he allegedly got into an altercation with a security guard outside of the Crypto.com Arena, which is right across the street from the Peacock Theater. At the time, he had just won three Grammys for "Best Rap Album," "Best Rap Performance," and "Best Rap Song." He was on his way to the arena when he experienced some miscommunication about the entrance. That's when Mike was confronted by the security guard and things went left.
The Dungeon Family member was taken into custody and didn't attend the live broadcast of the Grammy Awards. Last week, Mike returned to L.A. for a hearing regarding the incident. The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office declined to press charges against the seasoned rapper, but they warned him to stay out of trouble or the case will be reopened. Despite being banned from the Peacock Theater, Mike thanked BET for getting him access to the venue to accept his award.
“I wanna tell Black people that it’s because of BET I’m back, not ’cause of no white person," Mike said during his speech. "A Black man runs this business, a Black company puts this show on, and they got my Black ass back in here. Thank you. I’m moved and compelled to say this in this moment, a lot of people gonna say, ‘Who was he? Why did he get it?’ I am a representation of one of the finest things God has ever made. And that’s one-half of the Black family. Black men and women, I am you. Whether you’re young, whether you’re old, whether you like me, whether you don’t like me, I am absolutely you, and this win is absolutely ours.”
Congratulations Killer Mike!
