Texas rapper Cico P first released his single “Tampa” all the way back in 2019. Fast forward two years and an entire pandemic later and the song has become a smash hit with millions of streams online and thousands of videos made to the sound on Tik Tok. Stopping by On The Radar today we got to speak with Cico P about the success of the record, his new single “Half The Time” with Kevin Gates, performing at his first Rolling Loud this month + More!
While upon the initial release of “Tampa” Cico P did not expect for the song to do what it now has done. First noticing that the song was doing numbers on Spotify before Tik Tok he expressed how after only a few videos on the social media app he knew that he had a hit on his hands.
“We noticed it on Spotify first it was running up on its own, I was like damn this shit is crazy, I don’t know when Tik Tok came into it, for me it looked like one video went viral and the next thing I know there was a few of them, it took on fast all I know, I saw the views on the video start to go up”
Linking up with the legendary Kevin Gates for his latest single “Half The Time”, Cico expressed to us that it was a surreal experience as he grew up listening to Kevin Gates and to now not only have a record with him but also speaking regularly has been a blessing.
“I like Kevin, that’s my bro, that’s my boy we like this now, this record is a whole lot of nasty talk, it's toxic, we didn’t link up in the studio, but we linked up the day of the shoot and then we just tapped in, it's just crazy because I used to listen to him on some real and now I got a song and video with him. It’s funny how the universe is sometimes”
