Terrifying Video Shows Verrazzano Bridge Flex Amid Powerful Winds Monday

High winds during a monsoon-like storm on Monday caused plenty of issues on the roads for New York City's remaining commuters.

Among the complications was the closure of both the upper and lower levels of the Verrazzano Bridge.

In footage posted to Twitter on Tuesday, the city's longest bridge can be seen heaving up and down in the wind, making a mournful braying sound, as it battles gusts of over 70 miles per hour.

As harrowing as the scene from the Verrazzano looks and sounds, Gothamist notes that the Verrazzano was behaving precisely as it is designed to in extreme weather conditions.

Empty trucks and tractor trailer vehicles were the first to be banned from the Verrazzano Monday at around 10 a.m. Officials then closed the upper level. Just after 2 p.m. the lower level was closed as well. Many drivers' reported debris whipping about the span due to the winds.

The bridge began a staggered reopening again at about 3 p.m.

Elsewhere in the city, powerful winds brought down tree branches and disrupted outdoor dining in all five boroughs.
