Coronavirus Pandemic Is Making America’s Food Deserts Worse

Food deserts, or neighborhoods where residents have limited access to a grocery store, exist in every U.S. state. The coronavirus pandemic is making that scarcity even worse. NBC News’ Blayne Alexander talks to Americans trying to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to their communities.

A food desert is a neighborhood in which residents must travel over one mile to the nearest grocery store. Food deserts exist in at least 23 states and impact approximately 23.5 million people, disproportionately minority people.
