Funeral Held For 23-Year-Old Jersey City Police Officer Killed On Duty

One police officer was killed in an "active shooter situation" at a Jersey City bodega Tuesday afternoon, local officials say.

UPDATE as of 3:00 p.m.: It appeared both shooters were down, but law enforcement stressed that their investigation was still preliminary. Officers planned to send a robot unit into the store to confirm the status of the suspects.

Several local outlets report two suspects opened fire from the JC Kosher supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive near Bayview Avenue.

A law enforcement source described the incident at as "ambush" to NBC New York. The officer was shot in the head and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Two other officers were injured and one civilian was hurt,, officials said.

Gunfire reportedly broke out around 12:30 p.m. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, which was still being treated as an "active shooter" situation as of 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Heavily armed SWAT trucks swarmed the bodega, where it was believed at least one suspect was holed up. Gunshots can be heard in several videos posted to social media, as officers maneuvered into position around the store.

A dozen public schools in surrounding neighborhoods were placed on lockdown, but students were safe, officials said.
