Ex-Cop Who Killed Black Man In His Own Home Found Guilty of Murder

Ex Dallas police officer Amber Guyger who is white, was found guilty of murder in the fatal shooting of Botham Jean, a black man. Guyger faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. She claims that she parked on the wrong floor and entered Jean’s apartment by mistake. After entering the wrong apartment she argued that she fatally shot Jean in fear of her own life.

Many felt Guyger would avoid consequences when the case took a turn yesterday. The judge ruled that the jury may consider the castle doctrine law. The law is very similar to Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground Law. The castle doctrine law permits a person to use "force (even deadly force) in the protection of a home, vehicle, or other property if someone attempts to forcibly enter or remove an individual from the premises.” The defense argued that the law shouldn’t even be considered because Guyger wasn’t in her home. Nevertheless, after less than 24 hours of deliberation the jury found Guyger guilty.
