Small Possession Of Weed No Longer A Crime In New York

I'm all the way here for this!

In New York State Legislation decriminalizing small-time pot possession has been signed into law by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday, and will become law in 30 days time.

Gov Cuomo:

"Communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana for far too long, and today we are ending this injustice once and for all. By providing individuals who have suffered the consequences of an unfair marijuana conviction with a path to have their records expunged and by reducing draconian penalties, we are taking a critical step forward in addressing a broken and discriminatory criminal justice process.”

This new law reduces criminal possession of marijuana to a violation and cuts fines to $200 for possessing below two ounces of weed and caps fines at $50 for having under an ounce.

Glad to see NY is paving for the way for retroactive expungement of convictions for most weed related misdemeanors.
