'When They See Us' Leads 2019 Emmy Nominations With 16 Entries

On Tuesday,(July 15) the Netflix limited series ‘When They See Us’ landed 16 nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series, lead acting nominations for Jerome, Aunjanue Ellis and Niecy Nash, and a directing nomination for Ava DuVernay.

The series aired on May 31st and it showed the true story of The Central Park Five: Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, and Kevin Richardson, five teenage boys who were wrongfully convicted of raping jogger in 1989. In 2002 the men were exonerated after spending between 6 and 13 years in prison. They are now known as the “Exonerated Five”. 

Jharrel Jerome who gave an outstanding performance in the series played Korey Wise as a boy and as an adult shared his excitement on instagram. 

Now not only did the series break Netflix records streaming in over 23 millions households throughout the world, the series is sure to sweep multiple awards at the 71st Annual Emmy Award; premiering Sunday, September 22, 2019.
