MTA & NYPD To Crack Down On Fare Evasion

NYPD effort to combat spike in crimes in New York subway

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that on Monday he would be directing 500 extra police officers to the Subways and buses in an effort to combat a recent increase in commuter evading paying their fairs, the Governor also said that he is going to explore adding extra video monitoring.

The MTA is also set to come up with new designs for the turnstiles and gates, which most commuters just run through or hop over when they are trying to avoid paying the fair. Transit authority officials have reported that the MTA has losses up to $225 Million dollars due to evasion in 2019

However the MTA Chairman Pat Foye, claims that the extra presence of officials is not about arrests but more about deterring people from evading the fair
