Rihanna's usage of F.U. has landed her a big fat lawsuit.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Freedom United is suing the "Wild Thoughts" singer for her "confusingly similar" F.U. logo on her "Fenty University" clothing line produced by Puma.
The company claims they have been making clothing with their trademarked “FU” logo since 2006, way before Rihanna's 2017 deal with Puma. They additionally allege that RiRi knew of their existing FU logo, since she wore a Freedom United sweatshirt back in 2014, and even attended their launch party back in 2007. According to TMZ, Freedom United is also using Puma's website's mentioning of Rihanna as "most likely to break the rules" against them, saying Puma touts Rihanna as a lawbreaker of sorts, and her usage of F.U. is evidence of that.
Back in March, Freedom United sent a cease-and-desist letter to Rihanna and Puma, asking that Puma hand over all records of how much cash the Fenty Beauty creator has made since the launch of her F.U. line. However, Puma fired back with a letter of their own, which was obtained by TMZ, insisting that F.U. is not a unique trademark, given that it's just initials. They also cited their use of different font as a differentiating factor between the lines.
Later in the letter, Puma revealed that Rihanna's line ran its course and is no longer in production. However, Freedom United was not satisfied with their "explanation" or stop of production and is now suing both Rihanna and Puma for trademark infringement, and they're seeking an injunction against Rihanna's Fenty merchandise along with unspecified damages.
