Here's The Touching Story Behind A$AP Rocky's Met Gala Quilt

A$AP Rocky's 2021 Met Gala look has a touching backstory behind it.

As you know, the rapper used the quilt as a cape when he took to the Met Gala, alongside Rihanna, in mid-September, after ERL designer Eli Russell Linnetz found it in a California thrift store. Now, the family that donated the quilt has come forward to share its origin. After the fashionable late appearance, a woman named Sarah took to Instagram to share a side-by-side photo of the rapper and pop titan on the red carpet with the quilt laying on a bed at home.

"So my great grandmothers quilt was donated to an antique/thrift store a while back," she explained in the post's caption. "When I saw the#metgala Photo I realized instantly that it had to be the same quilt. I read the Vogue article about the designer finding the quilt in Southern California and with his office not that far from us in Venice California, I demanded that my mom go look for the photos of it on our old bed."

Meanwhile, Linnetz told Vogue that the quilt was discovered at a thrift store and touched on this year's theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. "I quilted on things that were important to me, from my dad's bathrobe to my boxers," he told mag. "Then we used these amazing plaids and flannels and embroidered my family's name all over the quilt."

Sarah has since revealed that she's spoken with Linnetz and is proud that her great-grandmother's item ended up being a show-stopping fashion piece. "I posted this because I found it amazing that some thing that my great grandmother made out of love for my mother, to be used to keep her warm, and was donated so that it might keep somebody else warm or sold to raise funds for a lovely charity, ended up being used for an amazing statement art piece by amazingly talented people who took it to the next level," she wrote in a follow-up post.
