DJ SpinKing joined Angie Martinez for an open conversation about the life-changing experience that launched his career, the relationships behind his success and why he believes a No. 1 record is in his future.
SpinKing began DJing at 16 after a serious car accident left him homebound. He candidly admitted that the crash happened after he drove while intoxicated as a teenager, leading to court involvement and house arrest. During that difficult period, his older brother taught him how to DJ, sparking a passion that ultimately changed the direction of his life.
By 17, SpinKing was promoting and hosting teen parties using money earned from working at his family’s store and sweeping hair at a barbershop. His early break came through the Simmons family, which led to several years touring with Diggy Simmons. Mentor J. Erving later encouraged him not to depend on one artist and to build a brand that could stand on its own.
That advice, along with the discipline instilled by his father, has guided his career. SpinKing lives by his father’s saying, “If you’re not early, then you’re late.”
Genuine relationships have also been essential to his longevity. SpinKing discussed his friendships with French Montana, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky and Fetty Wap. He credits authenticity with helping him earn artists’ trust, including Cardi B’s. He has DJed several major events for her, including tour dates and her Met Gala afterparty.
SpinKing also reflected on working closely with Pop Smoke, remembering the late Brooklyn rapper as a future superstar whose loss was heartbreaking. He recalled secretly bringing Tekashi 6ix9ine into Powerhouse after the artist had been barred from performing, resulting in one of the loudest crowd reactions he had ever witnessed.
During a conversation about DJ etiquette, SpinKing explained that great DJs must read the crowd, understand timing and control the room’s energy. One of his biggest pet peeves is watching DJs focus on themselves instead of the audience or play every major record too early.
Now, SpinKing is expanding beyond the DJ booth. He recently released a single featuring DaBaby and Fetty Wap, produced by Boi-1da, and plans to release singles across Afrobeats, dance, house, reggae and Spanish-language music instead of focusing on a traditional album.
His ultimate goal is clear: earning a No. 1 record. SpinKing’s confidence is rooted in years of preparation, hard work and strong relationships. For him, reaching the top is not a matter of if, but when.
Angie also uncovered a few fun facts. SpinKing owns approximately 200 colognes, named Tyla as his celebrity crush and chose Monica’s “Angel of Mine” as his karaoke song.
