On May 5th, Childish Gambino suprised the world with a music video called “This is America”. The video begins with Gambino dancing to a cheerful beat that is immeditalty disrupted, when he executes a black man by shooting him in the head.
Throughout the video, Glover is dancing erratically through a warehouse, with other things happening in the background-including a car on fire, a horse riding past and schoolchildren dancing.
The reactions on social media have been pouring in, with many writing how much the song has impacted them.
Mass shootings, protests, riots, violence against protesters, white supremacists, and overall being more enamored with trivial things like dance fads / talking about drugs & money rather than making an effort to speak out about the realities of our world— Taylor Berry (@tayruhberreh) May 6, 2018
“This Is America" touches on many themes at once, such as police violence, racism and gun crime. And also stresses the point that many people in America are distracted by the minor things, and fail to notice real problems happening around them.
The video was shot and directed by Hiro Murai, who has worked with Childish Gambino before on multiple music videos , as well as his hit TV show Atlanta.
