After releasing dual singles at the end of last month, Who That Boy and 911 / Mr. Lonely with ASAP Rocky and Frank Ocean respectively, Tyler, the Creator's upcoming album Flower Boy was leaked over the weekend. However, it's his Estelle collab, Garden Shed, that's making headlines. Many on of the contributors to Genius.com interpret the lyrics as him struggling with his attraction to men.
On the song he raps “Garden shed for the garcons / Them feelings I was guarding” which paints the titular garden shed as a metaphor for being in the closet. Garçons translates to "boys" in French.
He later adds "Truth is, since you kid, I thought it was a phase / Thought it would be like the Frank poof, gone / But, it's still goin on" which seems to refer to Frank Ocean's media disappearance after releasing Channel Orange and coming out on Tumblr in 2012. However, it seems the Californian rapper's inner struggle didn't vanish like he'd hoped.
Towards the end, he confesses "I was always like eh / Barely interested, but I bag just to brag to my boys like bruh" which implies his previous sexual encounters were rooted in impressing his peers and maintain a status quo.
Although this isn't the first time Tyler teases his sexuality, this is certainly the most serious we've seen him speak about it, signaling to many that his previous comments may not have been a joke.
Tyler, the Creator's new album, Flower Boy, is due July 21st.
