As he prepares for the release of his upcoming album, Joey Bada$$ takes some time to reflect on the death of his late friend Capital STEEZ. The Brooklyn native just released his next single that's dedicated to the Pro Era co-founder.
On Wednesday, July 7, Joey Bada$$ dropped the newest single off his upcoming 2000 album called "Survivor's Guilt." On the new Rahki-produced track, Joey reminisces about the good times he had with STEEZ and expresses how he feels about losing his good friend nearly a decade after his death. The song is a sequel to his track "Survival Tactics" featuring Capital STEEZ off Joey's debut project 1999.
"Ever since he left, I just been strugglin' without him, 'Cause I remember linkin' after school and we'd be plottin'," Joey raps. "Talk about our problems and what we do about 'em, Journalin' and jottin', we ain't know the world was watchin'/We was just two kids tryna make it out the bottom/Now I'm rich and rotten, everyday I think about him, it's survivors guilt."
Capital STEEZ was a rapper and producer who was vital to Pro Era's creation in 2011. He passed away in 2012 after he jumped off the roof of the Cinematic Music Group's headquarters in New York City. He was only 19. "Survivor's Guilt" is the latest single to come from Joey Bada$$'s upcoming 2000 album. Earlier this year, he dropped off other bangers like the Statik Selektah-produced "The REV3NGE" and "Head High." Last week, Joey dropped off his third single from the project "Where I Belong."
His 2000 album was supposed to drop last month but he had to push the release back due to sample clearances. Coincidentally, he pushed the album back just hours before Drake dropped his surprise album Honestly, Nevermind. After some fans claimed that was the reason he delayed the project, Joey Bada$$ shut down those rumors real quick.
"Y’all thinking I pushed my album back because drake is comedy," he tweeted on Friday, June 17. "Can’t say I ain’t happy tho hahaha."
