Japanese Billionaire Wants To Send Eight People To The Moon

A Japanese billionaire is planning to fly to the moon in 2023 and wants to bring eight people with him. In 2018, Yusaku Maezawa, who is the CEO of Japanese fashion retailer Zozo, became the first person to book a seat on SpaceX's planned mission to the moon. At the time, he said he was going to invite six to eight artists to join him on the flight.

On Wednesday (March 3), Maezawa announced that he was expanding the pool of applicants to the entire world.

"I wanted to reach out to a wider, more diverse audience," he said. "If you see yourself as an artist, then you are an artist."

Anybody who is interested must pre-register at dearmoon.earth by March 14. Interested applicants will then be sent information about the selection process, which will wrap up in June. The criteria for being selected were not disclosed.

Those who are selected for the mission will begin to prepare and train this summer. Maezawa said that applicants must be willing to push the envelope in terms of creativity and be willing to encourage others on the mission to do the same.

Maezawa said he will pay for the entire cost of the journey.

"I will pay for the entire journey. I have bought all the seats, so it will be a private ride," he said.

The mission will not involve landing on the moon. The six-day journey will ferry passengers around the moon and back to Earth.
