UPDATE: 'Bomb Cyclone' Winter Storm Hits New York Area

A winter storm warning and states of emergencies are in effect for parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The snow and dangerously cold weather hit the New York area Thursday.

Hundreds of schools were closed in the Tri-State area.

UPDATE (as of 7:00 p.m. Thursday)

The NY Sanitation Department said it could take until Monday to fully clear area roads.

Mayor de Blasio declared a winter weather emergency, but added that he expects school to be open Friday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for the New York City, Westchester and Long Island.

Cuomo said he's worried about power outages coming tonight with wind and even colder temperatures.

New Jersey Governor Christie declared a state of emergency for the entire state.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy says the worst of Winter Storm Grayson will hit the state this afternoon. He says residents should expect power outages and nonessential state employees should not report to work.

Governor Cuomo urged residents and commuters to stay home Thursday.

"The wind compounds the problem," Cuomo said. "Because snow is one thing; snow with 60 mph-plus gusts of wind is a very potent situation to deal with. It's almost impossible to clear roads when you have high wind gusts."

Cuomo said he's most concerned about commuters potentially becoming stranded on the Long Island Expressway overnight.

"The situation will deteriorate through the day and the afternoon and evening rush hour we expect to be worse [than this morning]."

"We advise everyone to stay home, stay safe and stay warm," Belmar, NJ, Mayor Matt Doherty told WOR's Len Berman in the Morning.

Friday will be sunny and windy with a high temperature of 14 degrees with wind gusts over 40 mph. Friday night should be clear with a low of 4 degrees with gusty winds, again possibly over 40 mph.

Alternate-side parking is suspended in the city Thursday and Friday, though meter rules remain in effect.

New York City and western Long Island are under a Winter Storm Watch until midnight Thursday.

Long Island and the Jersey Shore are under a Winter Storm Warning for the same period.
