Leon Thomas Talks Reinvention, Importance of Drake, The 50 Cent Influence..

From Broadway to Nickelodeon, behind-the-scenes studio sessions to solo center stage, Leon Thomas has been grinding quietly for years. Now, in a sit-down with the legendary Angie Martinez, the actor-turned-singer-songwriter-producer is stepping into his next chapter — fully in his bag and ready for the spotlight.

Best known to many as Andre Harris from Victorious, Leon’s fanbase spans continents, but his artistry now reaches far beyond teen TV. The Brooklyn native got his start as a theater kid at 10, performing in The Lion King on Broadway while still going to public school — something he says helped him stay “grounded and balanced.”

Leon reflects on his journey from producer to full-fledged artist. “A lightbulb went off when I was working with Drake,” he says. “I genuinely look up to him.” That studio moment with the 6 God was more than just musical — it was mentorship. Drake even gave Leon advice on his look, pushing him to embrace the full scope of being an artist, including the marketing and visual presentation that come with the territory.

Growing up in the spotlight taught Leon a lot, but he’s also done his homework. He references the “Law of Never Outshine the Master” from The 48 Laws of Power, a nod to the patience and humility he’s developed over time. “When I was younger, I was super loud,” he admits. “But I learned how to be more calm.”

Still, don’t mistake that calm for complacency. Leon describes himself as a “bit of a maniac” in the studio — a self-proclaimed “studio rat” who genuinely loves the process. And while fans are eager for what’s next, he’s not rushing. The deluxe version of his album is on the way, featuring seven new tracks and collabs with Kehlani, Big Sean, and Halle Bailey — but there’s no date just yet. “I’ve still got some things cooking.”

He’s also finding ways to bridge music and acting, drawing inspiration from moguls like 50 Cent, and viewing his career as “a family business” rooted in supporting the people he loves. The goal? Longevity, balance, and building something greater than himself.

As for the love life? He’s figuring it out. “Right now I’m just trying to balance my schedule and find some hobbies,” he says with a laugh. But don’t get it twisted — Leon is laser-focused.

Recently spotted at Coachella, performing alongside the iconic George Clinton, Leon name-drops artists like Tyler, The Creator and Justin Bieber as peers in this new artist era. And when it comes to influences, he shouts out the legendary Scott McGee, as well as fellow artist and “Disney peer” Coco Jones.

“None of this is by accident,” Leon says. “I couldn’t be more ready as a human being. I’m steady just getting better.”

Whether it’s the P-Funk era or modern R&B, producing hits or performing them, Leon Thomas isn’t just stepping into the spotlight — he’s building his own stage.
