From SoHo Hustle to SoHo Flagship: Telfar Clemens

In a candid conversation with Angie Martinez, designer Telfar Clemens reflects on his two-decade journey in fashion. Born in Lefrak City and raised between Liberia, Virginia, and D.C., Telfar began designing at 15 in Maryland while still in high school. After returning to the U.S. post-war, he hustled in NYC, selling unisex designs in SoHo.

“I’ve always funded my dream independently,” Telfar shares, describing his brand as a unique story in fashion. Known for his rebellious spirit, Telfar eschews traditional norms, even dismissing the CDFA Award, focusing instead on creating accessible, unisex designs that represent him and his community.

Now celebrating 20 years, Telfar’s first ever storefront is a space for creativity and loitering, while his Telfar TV and innovative ideas keep fans engaged. "There’s still so much to build,” he says, proving his vision continues to shape the fashion world.

Telfar's first-ever brick-and-mortar store, opening this Saturday, November 23, at 408 Broadway in SoHo, New York City. The 10,000-square-foot flagship will feature unique design elements by creative director Babak Radboy, including a TV studio for visitors to create and display content in-store. Fans can also look forward to exclusive "off-menu" items—unreleased bags—alongside their iconic collection.

This marks a new era for the brand, blending accessibility and creativity in the heart of NYC.
