Japan urged its citizens on Wednesday to stay home, as media reports warned that as many as 400,000 of them could die of the coronavirus without urgent action. They're now calling on every citizen to do their part after Japan is finally waking up to the fact that their situation is growing worse by the day.
While Japan has been trying to practice social distancing, folks are still outside and commuting all together in part because 80% of Japanese companies are not equipped to allow employees to work from home. Many Japanese people are still going about their normal daily lives and many businesses are still open.
The government is requesting that people isolate and businesses close, but there are no fines or penalties to force compliance.
Reports in Japanese media outlets cites that an undisclosed health ministry projection says fatalities could reach the 400,000-mark without mitigation measures. It also estimated that as many as 850,000 people could need ventilators.
