Workers In Half The States Will Get A Pay Raise In 2020

A record number of states, cities and counties will boost their baseline pay in 2020, giving raises to millions of low-wage workers.

On or around January 1, the minimum wage will increase in 21 states, later in the year, an additional 4 states and 23 cities and counties will hike their minimum wages, according to the National Employment Law Project, a worker rights group.

After December 31, 2019, all employees in New York City must be paid at least $15.00 per hour, and outsideNew York City the minimum wage is $11.10 per hour.

The country's highest minimum wages will be enacted in some California and Washington cities and counties. Workers in Seattle will earn one of the highest minimum wages in the country on January 1, when the baseline wage increases to $16.39 an hour. In Sunnyvale and Mountain View, California — the heart of Silicon Valley — the baseline hourly pay will rise to $16.05 from a previous floor of $15.64.
