In the past, Estelle had experienced a slight resistance from her label because she didn't follow the proper "formula" to make new music. Instead of continuing with the creative tug-of-war, Estelle went ahead and launched her won label to push her new album.
"This is why I'm on my own label. 'American Boy' did its thing and that took a lot of work. I don't write records for the sake of a formula. I don't do music for the sake of that. I do records that are literally in my lifespan. ... I can't do the formula stuff. It doesn't work for me, we tried it. ...
"I'm doing what's in my heart. I have my own label via BMG [New London Records]. And it's great, I'm happy.
