After leaving a friend's house Sunday at around 1 a.m., Sal Avila was attacked by a group of teenagers.
The attack happened near New York University's campus around Washington Square Park. Avila says he was passing the group of teens looking at his cell phone when he was unexpectedly punched in the face. He was punched so hard he had to get surgery for a fractured nose.
The attack was quickly diffused by passersby, and a 16-year-old boy was arrested for attempted robbery, but Avila believes the attack was random because the group of teens did not take or seem to be after any of his belongings.
