An elderly woman is dead after an early morning fire at a high rise building in the Chelsea section of Manhattan.

Fire officials say they responded to 315 Seventh Avenue about 4:30 a.m.  The fire was on the third floor but smoke rose several stories up.  Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to a single apartment, but couldn't save the woman.

"We attempted CPR on the victim and turned the victim over to EMS and the victim was pronounced dead," said Fire Chief Gene Rice.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
