17 suspects have been arrested for being involved in an international drug ring and smuggling a plant called khat into the states of New York, Massachusetts and Ohio.
The khat plant is a narcotic and gives off similar effects to amphetamines. The plant is considered a controlled substance and dangerous. Although not common in the United States, the khat is popular in the Middle East where people chew on the leaves to obtain a high.
The 17 people arrested are believed to have been receiving shipments from countries including the United Kingdom, Holland and China.
