Officer Melvin Santiago is being remembered at a funeral in Jersey City.

The 23 year old rookie cop was killed last Sunday morning after responding to a report of an armed robbery at a Walgreens.  He was shot in the head by a suspect who reportedly wanted to kill a police officer.

Police said Lawrence Campbell assaulted a security guard inside the store, stole his gun and then waited for officers.  He reportedly told a witness to watch the news, because he was “going to be famous.”

Today, Governor Chris Christie and police officers from around the state are expected to attend the funeral.

At a wake yesterday, Santiago was posthumously promoted to the rank of detective and was awarded the department’s Medal of Honor.  He joined the force in December.
