The New York City Department of Education wants to bring the food to where the kids are over the summer.
They have established a program that allows food trucks to deliver food to children who qualify for free or discounted school lunches over the school year. The Department of Education realizes that if the kids need assistance for food at school, they most likely need it at home as well.
The program started out with just one truck a few years ago, but now how four total that goes to parks and libraries in both Queens and the Bronx.
The meals are simple; the children get to choose between ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with either regular or chocolate milk.
