Mayor Bill de Blasio marched in a parade known as St. Pat's for All, while planning a boycot of Manhattan's annual St. Patrick's Day parade.
"My approach has been to embrace parades that are inclusive and that's the standard we're going to hold," de Blasio said.
He's planning to skip the St. Patrick's Day parade along Fifth Avenue because parade organizers won't allow groups to identify themselves publicly as gay. City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Public Advocate Letitia James are also boycotting the event.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said he will march in the parade. That's okay with de Blasio, who said he respects everyone's right to make their own decision.
Mayor de Blasio's predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, marched in both parades.
