Mayor Bill de Blasio and his family arrived in Italy yesterday, beginning an eight day vacation.

“Time with family is crucial and precious in life, and for the last couple of years that’s been hard to come by,” de Blasio said.

De Blasio met with Rome Mayor Ignazio Marino, with the two discussing income inequality and immigration.

“What I see in this mayor is a progressive person who believes in making this city function well for everyone,” de Blasio said.

Today, the mayor is scheduled to meet with the Vatican’s secretary of state.

The vacation was originally scheduled to be 10 days long, but de Blasio delayed his departure after a Staten Island man died while being taken into police custody.
